What Does “The Serpent” Mean in the Bible?
The question
A talking snake in Genesis. A seven-headed dragon in Revelation. Sixty-six books apart, wildly different pictures, and the Bible says they’re the same guy. How would you ever know that from reading Genesis alone?
The verse
“Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made…” — Genesis 3:1, KJV
Literal or symbolic?
🟡 SYMBOLIC — and this one might be the single clearest definition in the whole Bible. Four names, one verse, zero ambiguity.
What the Bible says it means
“And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world…” — Revelation 12:9, KJV
Count them. Dragon. Old serpent. Devil. Satan. One being, four names, stacked in a single sentence so nobody has to wonder.
And Revelation 20:2 does it again, same four names, in case you missed it the first time.
Paul confirms the Genesis link outright:
“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty…” — 2 Corinthians 11:3, KJV
The word behind the word
Each name tells you something different about him:

Four angles on one enemy: he’s frightening, he’s sneaky, he lies about you, and he’s against you.
Why it matters
Look at that phrase again — “that old serpent.”
That one. The one you already met. Revelation reaches all the way back across the entire Bible, grabs Genesis chapter 3, and says: same enemy. Still working and still using the same tool he used in the garden.
Which was never force. Look at Genesis 3; he never touches Eve. He asks a question. That’s it.
Revelation 12:9 tells you what he’s still doing today: he deceives. Present tense.
