What Do “Candlesticks” Mean in the Bible?

The question

Seven golden candlesticks, and Jesus walking in the middle of them. Beautiful picture — but is it furniture? Are we talking about actual lampstands in an actual room?

The verse

“And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man…” — Revelation 1:13, KJV

Literal or symbolic?

🟡 SYMBOLIC — same verse as the stars. Jesus defines both at once.

What the Bible says it means

“…and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.” — Revelation 1:20, KJV

Candlesticks = churches. Plain as that.

And Jesus had already used this exact image years before, on a hillside:

“Ye are the light of the world… Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.” — Matthew 5:14, 15, KJV

The word behind the word

The Greek is G3087, lychnia — and it doesn’t mean candle. It means lampstand.

That’s not a small difference. A candle burns itself down, producing its own light. A lampstand doesn’t produce anything. It holds up a light that came from somewhere else.

That’s the church in one word.

Why it matters

Once you see “lampstand,” Revelation 2:5 makes more sense:

“…I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” — Revelation 2:5, KJV

He’s not threatening to blow out the light. The light is His, and it isn’t going anywhere. He’s saying a church can lose its place as the holder of that light.

And where is Jesus standing in Revelation 1:13? In the midst of them. Right in the middle of His churches. Not distant. Not watching from far off. He’s walking among them.
